Stripe has reportedly finalized an agreement to acquire OpenRouter, according to a recent report from Bloomberg.
OpenRouter provides a platform that assists customers in selecting appropriate AI models for various tasks, tailored to their specific needs and budgetary considerations. The company announced in May that it had successfully raised $113 million in a Series B funding round, achieving an estimated valuation of $1.3 billion. Prominent investors in this round included Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures, and Alphabet’s Capital G.
At the time of its funding announcement, OpenRouter CEO Alex Atallah likened the company to "Stripe for AI," emphasizing its function as a singular access point for diverse AI systems, which helps prevent vendor lock-in for users. The startup also claimed to serve 8 million global users and offer access to more than 400 different AI models.
Last month, The Wall Street Journal had initially reported that Stripe and OpenRouter were engaged in acquisition discussions. Bloomberg now indicates that these talks have progressed to a definitive deal, with a reported acquisition price exceeding $7 billion.
When approached for comment by TechCrunch, a Stripe spokesperson stated that the company does not comment on rumors or speculation.
