At the start of Apple’s Surprise and Shine event on Wednesday, new CEO John Ternus outlined the company's AI strategy. He asserted that the iPhone is already the superior AI device available and that Apple prioritizes data privacy above all else compared to competitors.
These remarks come as Ternus assumes leadership from Tim Cook, who has become executive chairman. They provide a clear roadmap for Apple's competitiveness in the AI landscape. Rather than developing new hardware specifically for artificial intelligence, the company aims to position the iPhone as the central hub for consumer interaction with these new technologies.
During his introduction in Cupertino, Ternus defined the concept of an "intelligent personal hub." He described this ideal device as one that possesses a deep understanding of personal context, remains constantly accessible, and features a robust processor capable of executing AI models locally as well as a connection to the cloud for remote access.
Additionally, this device would require a large display, high-quality cameras, and microphones to perceive the surrounding environment, along with sufficient battery life to support constant use, Ternus continued.
Furthermore, he noted that the device must be easy to use without a steep learning curve. Finally, it should integrate seamlessly with other devices, applications, and services to create a unified user experience, he added.
"In other words, you would arrive at something remarkably familiar, because there is no product in the world better designed to be your intelligent personal hub than the iPhone," Ternus concluded.
Ternus also highlighted Apple's commitment to data privacy, stating, "others see [users’ personal] data as something to collect and store." This represents one of the strongest statements the company has made regarding how it plans to distinguish its AI platform from rivals.
"Honestly, trust only goes so far when your data is no longer yours to control; that is why Apple Intelligence executes on-device whenever possible," Ternus finished.
