SpaceX has finalized an agreement to acquire the artificial intelligence coding startup Cursor in a significant $60 billion stock transaction. This acquisition comes just days after the space exploration company's landmark initial public offering and less than two months following the initial announcement of their strategic collaboration.

The primary objective of this deal is to bolster SpaceX's burgeoning AI division, which is anchored by Elon Musk's xAI company, integrated into SpaceX earlier this year. This strategic move aims to accelerate its competitive standing against established major AI laboratories. Despite being a cornerstone of SpaceX's IPO commitments, the AI division has recently undergone a restructuring phase, prompted by recurring controversies, notably concerns over enabling the generation of non-consensual deepfakes depicting women and children.

During its IPO process, SpaceX communicated to investors a projected addressable market for AI products estimated at an astounding $26 trillion, a figure roughly equivalent to the entire U.S. Gross Domestic Product. SpaceX confirmed on Tuesday that the acquisition is anticipated to conclude within the third quarter of the current year.

Prior to SpaceX's intervention, Cursor was reportedly on the verge of securing a $2 billion funding round, attracting prominent investors such as Andreessen Horowitz, Thrive, and Nvidia. This funding initiative would have valued the AI coding startup at an impressive $50 billion, as previously reported by TechCrunch.

In a notable development preceding its IPO, Musk's company disclosed an unconventional agreement in April: it would either proceed with the $60 billion stock acquisition of Cursor or, alternatively, incur a substantial $10 billion break-up fee should the deal not materialize.

This evolving narrative continues to unfold, and further updates will be provided as they become available.
