Following a series of legal challenges regarding the insufficient safety protocols of AI chatbots, which have been linked to instances of teen suicide and other mental health issues, OpenAI revealed on Monday the introduction of ChatGPT for Teens. This new offering aims to integrate enhanced safety features and tackle the academic challenge posed by AI-assisted cheating in educational settings.

Focusing on the educational aspect, ChatGPT for Teens incorporates a novel Study Mode feature alongside other functionalities specifically designed to foster curiosity and empower young users to actively solve problems, rather than simply seeking immediate answers.

In a recent blog post, OpenAI detailed that the Study Mode option will provide teenagers with guiding questions and incremental support to facilitate a deeper understanding of the subject matter. Concurrently, the teen experience will feature homework reminders, triggered when a user seems to be attempting to bypass comprehension in favor of cheating. The AI chatbot will then prompt the teen to utilize Study Mode.

The company further stated that the application will support interactive quizzes and visual learning aids, along with controls enabling parents or guardians to determine if Study Mode is activated by default.

Nevertheless, questions remain regarding the efficacy of these new systems in preventing circumvention by uncooperative teens. Adolescents are notably proficient at bypassing parental controls and similar efforts to restrict digital interactions. The true difficulty of circumventing these safety measures in practice will only become apparent once ChatGPT's teen mode undergoes more rigorous evaluation.

OpenAI asserts that age-appropriate protections will be enabled by default in ChatGPT for Teens, aiming to minimize exposure to content deemed harmful or unsuitable for developing minds. These safeguards are rooted in OpenAI's Under-18 Principles outlined in its Model Spec, which the company states are informed by “developmental science and guidance from experts.”

Parents will also have access to the previously implemented family tools and parental controls, allowing them to manage settings, receive safety notifications, and establish "Quiet Hours," among other functionalities.

Furthermore, OpenAI has unveiled a partnership with CodeAI, intended to educate teenagers comprehensively about artificial intelligence, encompassing its operational mechanisms, methods for directing or querying it, and practical applications. For educational institutions, OpenAI already provides ChatGPT for Teachers, offering schools institutionally managed AI access and support.
