OpenAI is reportedly developing its inaugural hardware device, described as a mobile smart speaker featuring integrated artificial intelligence capabilities. This device is designed to seamlessly sync with ChatGPT and deliver various AI-driven services for the home.
According to a Tuesday report from Bloomberg, this device, which remains in its development phase, is envisioned as a screen-free unit. Internally, it is being positioned as a “humanlike AI companion that lives in the home.”
OpenAI has consistently expressed its ambition to introduce a hardware product, with earlier speculation even suggesting the development of its own smartphone, a move that would directly challenge Apple.
This strategic move by OpenAI aligns with a broader surge of interest within the tech industry concerning consumer AI hardware. Illustrating this trend, Hark, an AI laboratory founded by Brett Adcock, secured an oversubscribed $700 million in Series A funding in May, achieving a $6 billion valuation. Hark aims to develop what it terms “personal intelligence,” combining proprietary AI models with bespoke hardware designed as a “universal interface between humans and machines.” The company has yet to disclose the specific form factor of its device, highlighting the significant investment flowing into this sector even before products reach the market.
OpenAI's emerging device appears to represent a significant evolution beyond conventional smart speakers. Sources familiar with the project informed Bloomberg that the device will possess a “personality” and the capacity to proactively learn about its owner over time, thereby delivering increasingly personalized services. These sources also indicated that the machine would be able to access a user’s digital life, leveraging information such as emails.
Intriguingly, the device is also characterized as incorporating “mechanical elements that can move on their own.” The Bloomberg report further elaborates that its design aims to make it “feel like a companion and become a physical manifestation of OpenAI’s ChatGPT.”
Bloomberg notes that the device's development benefited from the expertise of numerous former Apple engineers who were instrumental in “creating products such as the iPhone and Mac.” While OpenAI appears poised to launch a new hardware line, the company is concurrently facing significant challenges due to hardware-related legal issues.
Last week, Apple filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging the AI company stole its trade secrets. Apple further asserted that the accusations in the suit represent merely “the tip of the iceberg,” with additional misconduct expected to surface during the legal discovery process. OpenAI, for its part, has denied any wrongdoing.
Citing anonymous sources privy to OpenAI’s strategic plans, Bloomberg reports that the company believes its new product “veers significantly from anything Apple has on the market today” and that it is “unlikely that it violates trade secrets” belonging to Apple.
