OpenAI is discontinuing Atlas, the AI-powered browser it launched in October with ChatGPT at its core. However, the company is not abandoning its vision for AI-assisted web browsing. Instead, it is integrating the advanced "agentic browsing" features initially tested in Atlas directly into the ChatGPT desktop application and a new Google Chrome extension.
This decision to phase out Atlas comes a few months after Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of applications, reportedly directed teams to reduce "side quests," a strategic shift that previously led to the shutdown of the AI video generation tool, Sora.
For much of the past year, the AI industry has been actively engaged in efforts to challenge Chrome’s dominance as the primary online platform. This competitive landscape saw the introduction of browsers like Perplexity’s Comet and The Browser Company’s Dia, while established players such as Google and Microsoft updated their respective browsers, Chrome and Edge, with new AI-powered functionalities.
After several months of experimentation, OpenAI appears to have concluded that the browser functions more effectively as a feature rather than a standalone destination. Consequently, Atlas’s browser-like agent capabilities are being integrated into existing user workflows, including within Chrome.
OpenAI is set to launch a ChatGPT extension for Chrome, granting it access to the context of the webpage a user is viewing. This will enable users to ask questions about content, summarize information, or initiate longer tasks directly from their browser. This offering positions itself as a direct competitor to Google’s Gemini Side Panel, which performs several similar functions.
Additionally, OpenAI is enhancing its ChatGPT desktop application by incorporating a more robust internal browser. This allows users to navigate websites, log into accounts, download files, and interact with web pages without needing to leave the ChatGPT environment. A separate cloud browser also operates remotely on OpenAI’s servers, serving as a dedicated platform for the app’s AI agents to complete tasks on a user’s behalf.
Together, these updates transform ChatGPT into a continuous workspace that seamlessly spans across the Chrome browser, the desktop application, and its integrated AI agent capabilities.
