The landscape of AI-powered dictation tools has experienced significant growth in recent years. Amidst a continuous stream of new launches, joining established applications like Wispr Flow, SuperWhisper, Willow, and Monologue, hardware innovator Nothing introduced its own competitive offering, Essential Voice, on Thursday.

Essential Voice shares a fundamental concept with its counterparts, enabling users to convert spoken words into formatted text across various applications. A key feature is its ability to automatically remove common filler words such as “um” and “ah.” Furthermore, the company highlights the option to create personalized voice shortcuts for frequently used words, links, templates, and phrases. For example, users can assign a specific phrase like “my address” to instantly input their complete address.

Currently, Essential Voice is available on the Phone (3). Nothing plans to extend its availability to the Phone (4a) Pro later this month, with support for the Phone (4a) anticipated to roll out next month.

Highlighting a significant efficiency gain, the average person types approximately 36 words per minute on a phone, yet can speak at a rate four times faster. Essential Voice capitalizes on this disparity by transforming spoken input into clear, ready-to-use written content.

Users can activate the feature by pressing the dedicated Essential key on compatible devices or through activation via the keyboard. This functionality bears a resemblance to a recent innovation from SuperWhisper, which allowed iPhone users to map their device’s action key for dictation access.

Beyond its core dictation capabilities, Nothing’s new tool offers direct text translation between languages, supporting over 100 languages at its initial launch. Looking ahead, the company also plans to introduce app-based custom styling, allowing users to adjust the tone of AI editing within specific application categories, such as professional work or casual messaging.

Nothing stands out as one of the pioneers in offering system-level integration for dictation. However, following Google’s recent introduction of its own offline dictation application, it is plausible that more companies will develop and release similar integrated tools in the near future.
