OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confirmed that the company will not pursue a public offering in 2026 during an interview with Fortune.
Over a 45-minute conversation, Altman discussed various topics including the recent Hugging Face hacking incident, the concept of recursive self-improvement, and the theoretical possibility of creating an AI that exceeds human control.
Regarding the uncontrollable AI scenario, Altman stated it is "absolutely" possible, but emphasized that he would take necessary actions to prevent such an outcome, even if it means pausing training. He remarked, "there are risks we should not be able to incur on behalf of humanity."
Altman also addressed the company's timeline for going public, stating, "We’re not rushing into an IPO. I actually think that, given everything happening with safety, this would be, right now would be an ill-advised moment to go public." He added, "We’ve got a lot of stuff to do" and reiterated that a public offering is not planned for 2026.
