Jeff Dean, one of Google’s longest-serving and most influential executives, is departing from the search giant to establish his own artificial intelligence startup.
He will be joined by a distinguished group of co-founders, all former top researchers from Google: Sanjay Ghemawat, a leading engineer and senior fellow; Quoc Le, a pivotal AI researcher and founding member of Google Brain; and Oriol Vinyals, a senior research scientist at Google DeepMind. Dean is slated to assume the role of CEO.
Their collective venture is named Discovery Loop, a public benefit corporation dedicated to leveraging artificial intelligence to significantly accelerate scientific discovery.
Discovery Loop intends to deploy advanced algorithms to concurrently initiate and refine thousands of experiments, aiming to partially automate the research workflow and dramatically increase the scope of experimental capabilities.
Furthermore, the startup aims to explore the application of AI to develop more potent AI systems—a concept referred to as recursive self-improvement—thereby completely removing human iteration from the development cycle.
In a press release, the company articulated its vision: “While science and engineering have tremendously advanced society over past centuries, progress has traditionally relied on slow, sequential human iterations, creating a significant bottleneck.” It added, “Discovery Loop is developing advanced AI systems that leverage massive computational scale to fundamentally transform the speed and efficiency of innovation by automating complete experimental loops.”
The concept of utilizing AI to accelerate scientific discovery has long captivated the scientific and technological communities, though until recently, its practical applications were largely experimental and commercially constrained.
Discovery Loop has secured financial backing from a diverse array of investors, notably including Alphabet, Google’s parent company. The inaugural funding round was co-led by Radical Ventures and Khosla Ventures, as announced by the company on Wednesday, with additional participation from Kleiner Perkins, Lightspeed, and Doerr Capital.
In a joint statement, the founding team declared, “The next great frontier for AI is to go beyond answering questions and to begin making discoveries.” They emphasized, “By fundamentally accelerating how engineering and scientific discovery are conducted, we can deliver the benefits of transformative technologies to the world far sooner.”
Dean’s tenure at Google began in 1999, making him the company’s 30th employee. Throughout his distinguished career there, he made foundational contributions to Google Search’s core infrastructure, including its crawling, indexing, and query-serving systems. His influence also extended significantly to Google Gemini’s multimodal models and he played a crucial role in the company’s pioneering AI research.
Speaking to The New York Times, Dean elaborated, “We think there is opportunity for AI to more fully automate what has traditionally been a very human-intensive experimental loop.” He concluded, “You will get both a higher quantity and a higher quality of experiments, and that will lead to scientific breakthroughs and advances.”
