Google to Test AI-Based Age Verification for Safer Online Access
Originally reported bycnbc
Google has announced plans to introduce artificial intelligence to estimate users' ages and ensure they access age-appropriate content across its platforms. The company will begin testing this machine-learning-based age verification model in the U.S. this year, with plans to expand it to other countries in the future.  This initiative aims to provide better online safety measures for children and teenagers, restricting access to certain features and content when necessary. The new AI-driven approach is part of Google's broader efforts to enhance digital protections for young users and their parents. Jenn Fitzpatrick, Senior Vice President of Google’s Core Technology team, explained that the model would help determine whether a user is under or over 18 to apply necessary restrictions. The Core unit, responsible for the company’s technical infrastructure and user safety measures, is leading the development of this AI model.  The move comes amid growing pressure from lawmakers for tech companies to strengthen child safety measures on their platforms. Google’s AI-based approach follows a similar initiative by Meta, which introduced AI-powered age verification features last year to detect users who may be lying about their age. The increased use of AI for online safety aligns with Google’s broader strategy of integrating artificial intelligence into various products and services. This latest effort is expected to improve the protection of young users across platforms like YouTube, where age restrictions already limit access to certain content.  While Google continues to refine its AI-based security measures, this move highlights the growing reliance on AI for managing online interactions. Despite a company-wide restructuring last year, which led to layoffs and role shifts in the Core unit, Google remains committed to strengthening user protection through advanced AI-driven solutions.
