Google is making a significant return to the smart glasses arena.

During its Google I/O event on Tuesday, the company unveiled a strategic collaboration with eyewear brands Warby Parker and Gentle Monster to introduce a new collection of AI-enhanced glasses. These devices are engineered for seamless integration with both Android and iOS platforms, and their design was developed in partnership with Samsung. Google confirmed that these innovative glasses are slated for release later this year.

The tech giant refers to these forthcoming devices as “audio glasses,” emphasizing their capability for users to issue verbal commands. This allows for efficient interaction with Google’s extensive suite of applications and services, including its advanced AI, Gemini, to accomplish various tasks.

Interaction is designed to be intuitive: users simply speak to their glasses. A demonstration shared at Google I/O illustrated this by showing a Google employee successfully ordering coffee online merely by voicing the command, with the synced device promptly executing the request.

Google has a notable history of experimenting with smart eyewear over the years. Its earlier venture, Google Glass, famously launched years prior, which regrettably contributed to the coining of the pejorative term “glassholes.”

However, the landscape of the smart glasses market has evolved considerably since that time. Recently, prominent corporations, most notably Meta, alongside a growing contingent of startups and smaller enterprises, have significantly increased their investments in this burgeoning sector.
