Renowned author Dave Eggers utilized an invitation from Sam Altman to address OpenAI staff as a platform for delivering a sharp critique of the company's work.
Last year, Sam Altman extended an invitation to author Dave Eggers to speak to approximately 200 OpenAI employees. Eggers is a highly accomplished writer, celebrated for his extensive body of work spanning novels, screenplays, and journalism, in addition to founding McSweeney’s and establishing multiple schools and non-profit organizations dedicated to supporting writers and the broader arts. One might have anticipated a presentation offering insights into prolific creativity or excelling across diverse fields. Instead, Eggers reportedly leveled significant criticism against the company. According to the Financial Times, Eggers conveyed to the staff:
“The effect of ChatGPT on educators’ lives is catastrophic. Whether you intended to do it or not, you’ve made every teacher’s life infinitely more difficult than it was two years ago. So, just let that settle in… If students are using it to compose, which is the biggest tragedy of all, they’ll never learn to write. And their voice is stolen from them. They’ll never have the ability to say their truth and tell their own story. And that’s silencing an entire generation or two.”
It is reasonable to assume that Altman may have anticipated Eggers' critical stance. The author's best-selling novel, The Circle, is widely recognized as a scathing commentary on the tech industry, and he has previously characterized AI-generated writing as "pastiche nonsense."
