Artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping the landscape of online search, establishing itself as the default mode for information discovery, irrespective of user preference. A recent report indicates a significant surge in the prevalence of Google’s AI-generated answers, dubbed AI Overviews. Within a single year, their appearance in search results escalated dramatically from 15% to 43%, fundamentally altering how web users engage with information online.

According to a comprehensive analysis of the generative AI sector by market intelligence firm Similarweb, what initially emerged as an AI overlay on traditional search has now evolved into an intrinsic component of the search journey. Google increasingly directs users into these AI Overviews, where they can then seamlessly transition to Google’s more interactive AI Mode to further their research.

This period also witnessed a remarkable increase in visits to AI Mode, rising from 126 million in June 2025 to 279 million by May 2026.

These statistics underscore a profound transformation in how individuals search the web. The shift marks a departure from an era where Google primarily offered a straightforward list of clickable blue links, moving towards one where Google itself functions as the ultimate destination, synthesizing answers and information directly from the websites it indexes.

Consequently, this development appears to extend the duration users spend within Google’s ecosystem, rather than merely using it as a conduit to external websites. Similarweb’s data from the past year reveals an increase in the average length of Google searches, suggesting that users are now substituting concise, keyword-based queries with more elaborate, conversational prompts designed to interact effectively with AI.

This paradigm shift has not been met with enthusiasm by publishers, who are experiencing a significant decline in referral traffic. The rise of AI citations, which often do not translate into direct clicks, is identified as the primary cause. Last year, Similarweb highlighted the particularly detrimental impact of this trend on news publishers. More recently, tech infrastructure firm Cloudflare introduced innovative tools enabling publishers to combat this by blocking AI crawlers from their sites, unless AI companies agree to pay for content access through Cloudflare’s marketplace.

Despite the concern over reduced click-throughs, Similarweb’s latest report notes that the number of AI responses incorporating a citation has increased more than fivefold over the last year.

However, even with this growth, only 6.8% of U.S. ChatGPT desktop queries included citations as of May 2026. Certain sectors, such as travel, retail, and sports, exhibited higher frequencies of cited responses compared to others.

Nonetheless, a glimmer of hope has emerged for publishers, particularly concerning ChatGPT. U.S. desktop referrals saw an improvement following a search update on May 7, which resulted in the proportion of visits landing on webpages more than doubling—from 25% in March 2026 to nearly 60% by May 30, 2026.

This positive trend suggests that users are actively engaging with and leveraging the more prominent blue links presented within AI-driven search results when they are made available.

Even with these encouraging developments, the overarching trajectory of AI search remains consistent: Google is progressively evolving from a mere gateway to the broader internet into a comprehensive destination in its own right.
