Codeium in Talks for Funding at Nearly $3 Billion Valuation
Originally reported bytechcrunch
Codeium, an innovative startup specializing in AI-driven coding solutions, is in discussions to secure a new funding round that could value the company at approximately $2.85 billion. This funding round is reportedly being led by returning investor Kleiner Perkins, as per two sources familiar with the situation.  This new round of financing follows just six months after Codeium completed a $150 million Series C funding at a post-money valuation of $1.25 billion, which was led by General Catalyst with participation from Kleiner Perkins and Greenoaks. The exact amount of the new funding has not been confirmed by TechCrunch, and neither Codeium nor Kleiner Perkins responded to requests for comments. The company has achieved around $40 million in annualized recurring revenue (ARR), which implies a valuation about 70 times its ARR—significantly higher than many of its competitors in the AI coding space.  For instance, Anysphere, which produces the AI coding assistant Cursor, recently raised funds at a $2.5 billion valuation, reflecting a 25 times ARR multiple based on its reported $100 million in revenue. Codeium competes with several players in the market, including Poolside, Magic, and Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot. Interestingly, it appears Codeium was not actively seeking new funds when investors approached them for this round. The company differentiates itself by focusing on enterprise customers rather than individual developers, boasting over 1,000 enterprise users, including notable names like Anduril, Zillow, and Dell.  Last November, Codeium launched its Windsurf Editor, which utilizes agentic AI to write code with minimal human input, a feature also offered by competitors like Cursor. Founded in 2021 by Varun Mohan and Douglas Chen, both MIT graduates, Codeium is quickly establishing itself as a leader in the AI coding sector.
