Canva's new AI-powered Magic Layers feature, intended to transform flat images into editable components, has encountered a significant glitch. Despite its design to avoid visible alterations to user content, the tool was observed by X user @ros_ie9 automatically changing the word "Palestine" in designs. A prominent example cited was the phrase "cats for Palestine" being inexplicably altered to "cats for Ukraine."

Investigations revealed that the problem appeared to be isolated to the word "Palestine," with related terms such as "Gaza" reportedly remaining unaltered by the feature. Canva has since confirmed that the issue has been resolved and stated that measures are being implemented to prevent any recurrence.

Speaking to The Verge, Canva spokesperson Louisa Green addressed the incident, stating, "We became aware of an issue with our Magic Layers feature and moved quickly to investigate and fix it. We take reports like this very seriously, and we’re putting additional checks in place to help prevent this in future. We’re sorry for any distress this may have caused."

While replies to the now-viral X post indicated that other users successfully replicated the bug prior to Canva's fix, subsequent independent testing did not reveal any words, including "Palestine," being altered by the feature.

This incident represents a significant misstep for a platform actively positioning itself to compete with Adobe's advanced suite of AI-driven design tools. The Magic Layers feature is a cornerstone of Canva's recent AI overhaul, which the company proudly proclaimed "marks the beginning of the next era of creation."
