Anthropic recently made a significant impact in the AI sector by securing a deal to acquire 300 megawatts of compute capacity. This strategic move effectively claimed the entire output of the Colossus 1 data center, situated near Memphis, Tennessee.

Such a large-scale compute acquisition, however, comes with a substantial financial commitment. Anthropic is set to pay xAI $1.25 billion per month until May 2029, with a reduced rate applied for the initial two months while xAI finalizes its operational ramp-up. In total, this agreement is projected to generate over $40 billion in revenue for xAI.

The specifics of this substantial transaction were disclosed through SpaceX’s S-1 filing with the SEC. The company articulated that the deal "allows us to monetize unused compute capacity in our infrastructure." Additionally, the contractual terms include a provision for either party to terminate the agreement with 90 days' advance notice.

The filing further indicated future intentions, stating, "We expect to enter into additional similar services contracts."

This strategic maneuver positions xAI uniquely within the AI market, adopting a hybrid operational model. Traditionally, most industry players either develop data centers exclusively for their own use or provide cloud services to others; combining both functions simultaneously is uncommon. This evolving approach, sometimes termed a "neocloud," enables AI firms to mitigate infrastructure expenses by offering their surplus capacity as a cloud provider when their internal demand falls short. SpaceX champions this arrangement as a judicious utilization of assets, articulating, "We believe our dual monetization strategy provides multiple pathways to generate returns on invested capital."

However, an underlying implication is hard to overlook. It appears xAI may have built out more compute capacity than immediately required, necessitating a strategy to monetize this surplus, potentially in anticipation of a public offering. A significant decline in the usage of Grok, xAI’s primary AI assistant, in recent months has reportedly freed up servers that the company is now leasing to one of its direct competitors.
