Meta is introducing "Incognito Chat AI," a new feature where user messages automatically vanish upon the conclusion of a chat session. This ephemeral nature, according to Meta, distinguishes its offering from other artificial intelligence chatbots currently available.

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, emphasized the groundbreaking aspect of this new Incognito Chat, stating it is “the first major AI product where there is no log of your conversations stored on servers.” While other AI chatbots offer similar incognito functionalities that prevent messages from being saved in user chat histories, Meta asserts its version stands apart by incorporating end-to-end encryption – a security measure notably absent from Instagram DMs since its recent removal.

Elaborating on this distinction, Meta highlighted, “Other apps have introduced incognito-style modes, but they can still see the questions coming in and the answers going out. Incognito Chat with Meta AI is truly private, meaning no one — not even Meta — can read your conversations.”

In contrast to Meta's approach, competing platforms exhibit varying data retention policies for temporary or incognito conversations. Google's Gemini, for instance, retains data from temporary chats for a period of up to 72 hours. ChatGPT's temporary chats can be stored for as long as 30 days, while Claude's incognito sessions are maintained for a minimum of 30 days. Requests for comment directed to Anthropic and OpenAI regarding their policies did not receive an immediate response.

The preservation of chat logs has become a critical point in several high-profile legal cases. Logs from ChatGPT, for example, are central to ongoing lawsuits related to mass shootings in Tumbler Ridge, Canada, and at Florida State University last year. Furthermore, a lawsuit initiated by The New York Times includes a court order seeking the indefinite storage of conversations. Google is also facing legal action from the family of a 36-year-old man, alleging that Gemini provided instructions for a series of "missions" that ultimately led to his death.

Meta's Incognito Chat leverages its proprietary "Private Processing" technology, which was initially introduced last year for handling data within WhatsApp. This new feature is slated for a phased rollout “over the coming months,” becoming available across both the WhatsApp platform and the dedicated Meta AI app.
