Zuckerberg Ditches Metaverse for AI-Driven Social Media Vision

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is shifting his focus from the metaverse to AI-driven social media. During a recent earnings call, Zuckerberg emphasized that AI would be the next major format for media, offering more immersive and interactive experiences. He explained that social media evolution has moved from text to photos and videos, with AI now poised to usher in a new wave of media formats, enabled by technological advancements.

Zuckerberg shared that Meta’s apps, currently dominated by algorithmic recommendations, will soon evolve to offer users AI-generated content that is tailored specifically to their interests. This will include content that is more personal and engaging, generated directly by AI systems. Last year, Zuckerberg hinted at expanding Meta’s content library by leveraging AI to make content easier to create and remix. One example is the new "Vibes" feed in the Meta AI app, which lets users scroll through a stream of short, AI-generated videos.

Additionally, Zuckerberg teased the possibility of new features where users could create entire virtual worlds or games by simply providing prompts, which could then be shared with others. He further suggested that videos could become interactive, allowing users to tap on videos and engage with them in more meaningful ways. This could mark a future where AI-generated content is not only personalized but also immersive and interactive.

Surprisingly, Zuckerberg didn’t mention the metaverse or set specific goals for Meta’s virtual reality initiatives, such as Horizon Worlds. Instead, he noted that investments in VR and virtual worlds would complement Meta’s AI advancements, making these experiences accessible on mobile devices. Despite the shift in focus, Zuckerberg remains committed to integrating AI into all aspects of Meta's platforms, signaling the company's bold new direction in social media.
