Meta's recent experiences suggest that the widespread replacement of human roles with artificial intelligence is proving more challenging than initially perceived.
According to a Reuters report, at an internal town hall held on Thursday, CEO Mark Zuckerberg informed staff that the pace of AI agent development had not "accelerated in the way" executives had previously expected.
Earlier this year, Meta undertook significant workforce adjustments, laying off approximately 8,000 employees—roughly 10 percent of its corporate workforce—while reassigning another 7,000 to various AI-focused groups, including a unit known as Agent Transformation, as reported by Bloomberg.
During this week's meeting, Zuckerberg reportedly addressed these job reductions, acknowledging that they were not as "clean" as they should have been. He further stated that these cuts were motivated by concerns among top company officials that Meta "weren’t going to move fast enough to adapt" to the rapidly changing landscape of the tech industry.
The corporate leader also indicated that the anticipated advantages of the new AI-centric company structure had not yet "come to fruition." However, he expressed belief that the company would begin to see improvements from its substantial AI investments within the next three to six months. This perspective contrasts with several investigative reports that have depicted Meta’s months-old AI unit as a "soul-crushing gulag," according to some engineers assigned to it.
Meta has indeed invested heavily in AI, with Reuters reporting that the company is projected to spend as much as $145 billion on AI infrastructure this year.
