Zendesk has announced its acquisition of Forethought, a company renowned for developing software that automates customer service interactions. This strategic transaction, revealed on Wednesday, is anticipated to reach its conclusion by the end of March.

While AI agents, particularly within the customer service domain, are currently experiencing a surge in popularity, Forethought demonstrated remarkable foresight, operating years ahead of its peers. The company notably emerged as the 2018 winner of TechCrunch Battlefield, the esteemed startup pitch competition, a significant achievement considering ChatGPT did not launch until late 2022.

Following its success at Battlefield, Forethought attracted a roster of prominent clients, including Upwork, Grammarly, Airtable, and Datadog, according to company statements. By 2025, its technology was reportedly facilitating over a billion customer interactions each month.

The financial terms of the acquisition have not been disclosed. Forethought had previously secured a total of $115 million in funding from a diverse group of backers, including Blue Cloud Ventures, NEA, Industry Ventures, Neo, Village Global, and Sound Ventures. Notable angel investors such as May Habib (Writer), Scott Wu (Cognition), Karan Goel (Cartesia), and Gwyneth Paltrow also contributed, as the company revealed during its $25 million funding round last year.

Shortly before the acquisition was publicly announced, Nicholas (presumably a Forethought representative) participated in TechCrunch’s Build Mode podcast. During his appearance, he delved into his preparations for winning Battlefield, strategies for acquiring initial customers, and his vision for the future of agentic technology, encompassing advancements like browser control.

In related news, applications for the 2026 TechCrunch Startup Battlefield are presently open.

Zendesk, widely recognized for its self-help customer service products, has affirmed its commitment to continuing support for Forethought’s existing customer base. Furthermore, it plans to integrate the startup’s advanced technology into its own suite of AI products, enhancing capabilities such as specialized agents, self-improving AI, voice automation, and more autonomous functionalities. The company projects that this acquisition will accelerate its product roadmap by more than a year.

Zendesk has been a privately held entity since November 2022, when a consortium led by private equity firms Hellman & Friedman and Permira acquired it in a $10.2 billion deal. The decision to not disclose the terms of this latest acquisition aligns with Zendesk's consistent pattern over time. Since its founding in 2007, Zendesk has completed approximately a dozen acquisitions, with the few instances of disclosed prices being modest, such as $29.8 million for live-chat company Zopim in 2014 and $45 million for analytics firm BIME in 2015.
