With AI video models continuously advancing, YouTube is transitioning from solely relying on creators to label their AI-generated content. The platform announced on Wednesday that its internal systems will now automatically apply labels to videos upon detecting the use of “significant photorealistic AI.”

Furthermore, YouTube intends to enhance the visibility of these AI labels, ensuring they are more readily noticeable across both its long-form video content and YouTube Shorts.

The implementation of AI labels on the video platform dates back over two years, following an update to YouTube's AI policies and the introduction of a Creator Studio tool. This tool mandated creators to disclose AI content that could be confused with a real person, location, or event. However, videos featuring clearly animated or imaginative scenarios—such as a unicorn traversing a fantastical realm—were exempt from this labeling requirement.

While YouTube asserts that its core AI labeling policy remains consistent, it will now adopt a more proactive approach to content moderation on its platform. This strategic shift comes on the heels of Google's introduction of Gemini Omni at its recent I/O developer conference—a new suite of multimodal AI models capable of generating high-quality videos demonstrating comprehension of physics, culture, history, and science.

Effective May, YouTube will begin deploying novel internal signals to assist in identifying AI-generated content and applying appropriate labels, according to the company. This initiative does not absolve creators of their responsibility to disclose AI usage; rather, it signifies that YouTube will undertake the labeling process if creators fail to do so themselves.

Should a creator's content be erroneously identified, they will retain the ability to amend the disclosure status within a YouTube video. However, the company clarifies that labels applied to content generated using YouTube's proprietary AI tools, such as Veo or Dream Screen, will be irremovable.

Furthermore, labels will be permanently affixed to videos that incorporate C2PA metadata, signifying that the content was entirely AI-generated. This aligns with recent industry developments, including OpenAI's commitment to the C2PA standard, joining prominent entities like Nvidia, Kakao, and Eleven Labs.

The introduction of this automatic AI detection capability closely follows the expansion of YouTube's AI deepfake detection system. This enhanced system now permits any adult user to specifically scan YouTube for face matches, building upon initial testing conducted with celebrities, public figures, politicians, and other content creators.

Re-emphasizing its commitment, YouTube states it will ensure AI labels are both more consistent in their application and more prominent in their display.

Specifically, for long-form videos, these labels will now be situated directly beneath the video player and above the description. On YouTube Shorts, they will be overlaid directly onto the content.

This repositioning, according to the company, is designed to make the labels more conspicuous to users encountering photorealistic, AI-altered, or AI-generated content across the platform.

Conversely, for AI video content that is only minimally altered, animated, or clearly unrealistic—such as the previously mentioned fantastical unicorn scenario—the label will exclusively be found within the expanded video description.

It is noteworthy that YouTube has confirmed that the presence of AI labels will not influence a video's recommendation algorithm or its eligibility for monetization.

Beyond its efforts in policing AI-generated content, YouTube has also been actively investing in AI technologies for various other applications. These include its interactive search feature "Ask YouTube," a playlist generator for YouTube Music, AI-powered video summaries, and a range of other generative AI creation tools.
