New AI labels are beginning to mark tracks created "primarily" using generative AI tools, with the initial rollout occurring within the YouTube Music app.

YouTube is introducing a "Made with AI" label for tracks that have been "altered or fully generated" using artificial intelligence. The company is applying this labeling process similarly to how it handles AI-related content on its video platform. The initiative does not cover every instance of AI tool usage in music creation; however, YouTube specifies that it includes scenarios where a generative model is used to develop both the composition and vocals. To ensure transparency, YouTube has established guidelines for music partners regarding the disclosure of generative AI use. If partners fail to disclose AI usage, YouTube indicates it may utilize "other signals" to determine if a song is AI-generated.

The rollout of these labels begins today in the YouTube Music application, with an expansion to the main YouTube platform planned for later.

Users will be able to access more details by tapping on the label located on the player page.

When listening to a track on YouTube Music where artificial intelligence played a significant role, a label will appear directly on the player interface. Tapping on this label reveals a simple menu containing additional information.

YouTube states that it is collaborating with music partners and leveraging internal detection tools to identify AI-generated tracks, adhering to the same labeling principles already utilized across its services. The stated objective is to provide viewers and listeners with the necessary information and clarity regarding the music they consume.

While Spotify launched a voluntary AI label earlier this year and announced it would not recommend songs from "AI personas," Apple Music is reportedly also receiving an AI tagging feature. Competing music platforms are taking more drastic measures to push back against AI-generated music; for instance, Deezer added a filter to block AI tracks, and Bandcamp completely banned AI music earlier this year.
