YouTube announced on Thursday the unveiling of new podcast features for its Premium subscribers. These enhancements include an AI-powered recommendation engine, an "Auto speed" setting, and a dedicated "on-the-go" listening mode.
This update signifies YouTube's continued strategic efforts to compete for podcast audiences, particularly as streaming giant Netflix increasingly invests in video podcasts. By focusing on personalized discovery and hands-free listening capabilities, the company also appears to be targeting users who primarily consume podcasts through audio-first applications such as Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
Building on the Google-owned platform’s existing “Ask Music” feature, which already allows Premium users to generate personalized radio stations and playlists, subscribers will now receive podcast recommendations tailored to specific genres, their current mood, or shows they already enjoy.
Users will also gain access to a novel “Auto speed” feature. This innovation is designed to optimize listening efficiency by intelligently adjusting playback speed during slower speech segments or parts with dense information, thereby creating a more streamlined experience without compromising comprehension.
While manual playback speed adjustments are currently available, their effectiveness can be inconsistent when hosts speak at varying speeds or alter their tone. This new feature will enable listeners to experience content at a dynamically adjusted speed that accommodates such fluctuations throughout a conversation.
The new "on-the-go" mode provides Premium users with listener-friendly controls, specifically designed for activities like running, commuting, or multitasking. Users will benefit from quick access to functions such as skipping forward or backward, or navigating directly to the next episode. YouTube states that this feature is intended to maximize the utility of background playback.
Both the "Auto speed" and "on-the-go" modes are currently available for Premium users on Android devices, with an anticipated rollout to iOS in the coming months.
YouTube reports that Premium users consumed over 800 million hours of podcasts in April 2026, and that YouTube Podcasts currently serves over 1 billion monthly active users. With the introduction of these new features, the company aims to both retain its existing user base and further grow these significant numbers.
