Sunrun is developing a "nationwide compute network" designed to power artificial intelligence operations using compact compute nodes situated within its customers' residences.

The solar and home energy storage provider is venturing into the AI data center sector, not through traditional construction, but by incentivizing its customers to host compute units within their homes. Sunrun is initiating a pilot program for its novel "distributed AI compute" initiative, which will strategically "place numerous compute nodes in homes equipped with Sunrun solar and battery storage systems." Participants in this pilot program will receive "compensation."

Sunrun intends to market the distributed computing power generated by these nodes to "enterprise compute buyers," including artificial intelligence firms. This represents an innovative strategy for sourcing resources and physical space for AI compute infrastructure, particularly as conventional data center developments encounter growing opposition nationwide. A survey published in May revealed that over 70 percent of Americans object to the construction of new data centers in their localities, frequently citing concerns regarding pollution, noise, and the consumption of water and electricity.

Instead of centralizing computing power within a single, large data center, Sunrun’s program disperses it across numerous smaller compute units strategically located throughout the country. While Sunrun reports a "successful" proof of concept for this initiative, its broader efficacy remains to be fully determined. This venture marks a significant new direction for Sunrun, a company primarily known for its home energy storage solutions. Its 1.1 million customers are eligible to join the pilot program waitlist if they are amenable to hosting a compute node. The company stated it "expects to complete the pilot over the coming months and will assess results" prior to a more extensive deployment of the program.
