Microsoft announced significant leadership changes within its gaming division on Friday, confirming the departure of Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer and Xbox President Sarah Bond.
Spencer's successor will be Asha Sharma, a former executive from Instacart and Meta, whose most recent role at Microsoft was as president of its CoreAI product. These strategic appointments strongly indicate Microsoft's intensified focus on integrating artificial intelligence into the video game landscape.
The company has previously explored the convergence of AI and gaming, notably through the development of an AI gaming companion and the release of an early, AI-generated level for "Quake II," which encountered some technical issues.
In an internal memo, which was subsequently published by The Verge, Sharma articulated her vision for the future, stating that Microsoft "will invent new business models and new ways to play," emphasizing that "monetization and AI" are both set to "evolve and influence this future." Crucially, she also tempered expectations, asserting that the company "will not chase short-term efficiency or flood our ecosystem with soulless AI slop."
Sharma further underscored her philosophy, adding, “Games are and always will be art, crafted by humans, and created with the most innovative technology provided by us.”
This commitment to human-centric art, augmented by technology, is one of three core pledges Sharma outlined in her memo. The others include a dedication to developing "great games beloved by players" and a clear prioritization of the Xbox platform.
