xAI is charting a new course, structuring its operations into four distinct divisions: Grok, Coding, Imagine, and Macrohard.
This strategic realignment follows the recent xAI-SpaceX merger, announced last week, which also incorporated social media platform X. Valued at a staggering $1.25 trillion, making it the largest merger in history, this integration has coincided with the abrupt departures of several xAI employees and two of its co-founders. Many of these individuals posted extensive farewell messages online, with some also revealing plans to launch their own artificial intelligence ventures.
Among the notable exits are co-founders Yuhai (Tony) Wu and Jimmy Ba. Wu announced his departure on X, stating it was "time for [his] next chapter," while Ba echoed a similar sentiment, declaring it was "time to recalibrate [his] gradient on the big picture." These significant departures have reduced xAI's founding team by half, leaving only six of the original twelve co-founders remaining on staff.
These internal shifts unfold against a backdrop of evolving ambitious plans for the newly combined entities. Elon Musk recently unveiled a vision for "space-based AI" data centers and a comprehensive vertical integration strategy encompassing "AI, rockets, space-based internet, direct-to-mobile device communications and the world’s foremost real-time information and free speech platform." Furthermore, reports indicate Musk discussed establishing an AI satellite factory and even a city on the moon during an internal xAI meeting.
On Wednesday, Musk addressed the situation on X, explaining that "xAI was reorganized a few days ago to improve speed of execution" and acknowledging that this process "unfortunately required parting ways with some people." He subsequently issued an open call for new applicants to join the company. In a move towards transparency, Musk also shared a recording of xAI’s 45-minute internal all-hands meeting, where these significant changes were announced.
During the meeting, Musk articulated the rationale behind the restructuring, stating, “We’re organizing the company to be more effective at this scale.” He further detailed the four primary application areas for the reorganized company: Grok Main and Voice, Coding, Imagine (focusing on image and video), and Macrohard, which Musk described as being "intended to do full digital emulation of entire companies."
