X has declared its intention to penalize creators who publish AI-generated videos depicting armed conflict without explicitly disclosing their artificial origin. On Tuesday, Nikita Bier, X’s head of product, announced that individuals employing AI technology to mislead users in this manner would face a 90-day suspension from the platform’s Creator Revenue Sharing Program.
Should these creators persist in disseminating misleading AI content subsequent to their initial suspension, they will be permanently barred from the program.
Bier underscored the urgency of ensuring public access to authentic information during periods of war, stating, “During times of war, it is critical that people have access to authentic information on the ground. With today’s AI technologies, it is trivial to create content that can mislead people.” He further clarified the immediate implementation of the policy: “Starting now, users who post AI-generated videos of an armed conflict — without adding a disclosure that it was made with AI — will be suspended from Creator Revenue Sharing for 90 days.”
X confirmed its strategy for identifying such deceptive posts, which will involve a dual approach: leveraging a suite of tools designed to detect generative AI content, alongside its collaborative Community Notes system.
The Creator Revenue Sharing Program on X allows content creators to earn income by sharing in advertising revenue based on the popularity of their posts. While established to foster a greater volume of engaging content on the platform, the program has drawn criticism for allegedly incentivizing creators to produce sensationalized material, such as clickbait or content designed to provoke outrage. Further critiques have targeted its perceived lax content moderation and the prerequisite for creators to be paid X subscribers to participate.
Considering the facility with which AI can be employed to generate deceptive photos and videos, X’s new policy, which specifically targets financial rewards for such content, is seen by some as a partial solution. Beyond the context of armed conflict, AI-generated media is frequently utilized to spread political misinformation or promote deceptive products within the influencer economy — applications that appear to remain permissible under the newly announced guidelines.
