WordPress has announced a significant evolution in its publishing software, now enabling it to operate entirely within a web browser. Unveiled on Wednesday, the new service, my.WordPress.net, empowers users to establish a website and commence publishing instantly, circumventing the traditional requirements of signing up, configuring a hosting plan, or registering a domain. This innovative solution harnesses the identical technology previously utilized for WordPress demonstrations, making it accessible as a persistent, personalized publishing platform.
However, a crucial distinction accompanies this new operational mode: sites created on my.WordPress.net are inherently private and are not discoverable or accessible via the public internet.
As detailed in a blog post introducing the service, "They aren’t optimized for traffic, discovery, or presentation, and they don’t need to be." The post further clarifies, "Instead, WordPress becomes a personal environment where ideas can exist before they are ready to be shared, or where they may never be shared at all."
These browser-based sites store all their data within the user's web browser, meaning access is confined to the device on which they were created. Should a user wish to make their site public, a seamless migration option to a dedicated WordPress host is available.
This initiative positions WordPress as an ideal personal workspace for diverse activities such as private writing, journaling, drafting, research, learning, or developing bespoke tools for individual use. To facilitate the latter, my.WordPress.net includes an App Catalog featuring various tools built using WordPress plugins, including a Personal CRM, a Personal RSS Reader, a bookmarking utility, and an AI Workspace, among others.
The underlying technology for my.WordPress.net is WordPress Playground, an open-source project that allows one-click WordPress installation on any device. WordPress Playground also integrates with OpenAI and CLI apps, enabling the creation of new tools. Consequently, users can leverage an AI assistant to modify their my.WordPress.net environment, performing tasks like tweaking existing plugins or developing new ones.
Furthermore, the AI assistant can be queried about data stored within WordPress, retaining this information to transform WordPress into an AI-powered personal knowledge base.
Users are advised that the initial launch of the service may take longer, and regular backups are strongly recommended. The storage capacity begins at approximately 100 MB, making it most suitable for smaller, personal applications and use cases.
To manage content, users can reset their site with a single click at any time. Alternatively, temporary instances can be created, which automatically reset upon browser refresh.
This service launch follows the establishment of a dedicated WordPress AI team last year, focused on developing new AI products for the developer community. Concurrently, the commercial hosting platform WordPress.com also introduced an AI website builder in the past year, allowing users to design sites through an intuitive AI chatbot-style interface.
