As artificial intelligence increasingly integrates into editorial and media landscapes, various online platforms are actively working to establish clear guidelines for its application. This week, Wikipedia implemented a significant change, prohibiting its editors from using AI-generated text. However, the policy stops short of a complete ban on AI's involvement across all editorial processes.

Through a recent update to its guidelines, the collaborative encyclopedia now explicitly states that "the use of LLMs to generate or rewrite article content is prohibited." This new directive serves to refine and clarify earlier, less specific language which had previously advised that LLMs "should not be used to generate new Wikipedia articles from scratch."

The integration of AI within Wikipedia articles has become a subject of considerable debate among the platform's extensive, volunteer-driven community of editors. According to a report by 404 Media, the updated policy, which was put to a community vote, received overwhelming approval, passing with a decisive 40-to-2 majority.

Nevertheless, the newly adopted policy does make provisions for the continued, albeit limited, use of AI in certain editorial functions.

The policy specifies that "Editors are permitted to use LLMs to suggest basic copyedits to their own writing, and to incorporate some of them after human review, provided the LLM does not introduce content of its own." It further cautions, "Caution is required, because LLMs can go beyond what you ask of them and change the meaning of the text such that it is not supported by the sources cited."
