On Tuesday, President Donald Trump officially announced the debut of America.gov, a new AI-driven chatbot designed to assist citizens in locating essential government services and information.

Google has confirmed its role as a partner in this initiative, revealing that its Gemini AI model is involved in the project, although it remains uncertain whether other tech companies are also contributing.

In a post on X, Trump stated, “Instead of forcing citizens to search through the endless maze of tens of thousands of government websites and rules… you’ll now have one front door for every single question.”

While simplifying government access is a noble objective, relying on a chatbot raises questions about reliability. Large language models are susceptible to errors, including hallucinations. As CNN recently reported, the U.S. military nearly launched an attack on a Chinese vessel thinking it carried nuclear components, only to abort the mission when the AI's output turned out to be a hallucination.

Although an error from America.gov is unlikely to cause military conflict, the stakes are still high. Citizens may depend on the tool for critical tasks like applying for food stamps, renewing visas, or filing taxes, where inaccurate data could lead to missed deadlines, denied benefits, or financial penalties.
