Webtoon's Canvas platform, dedicated to user-uploaded comics, is set to undergo a significant transformation aimed at empowering creators to increase their earnings and broaden their reach.
Webtoon today unveiled a series of forthcoming features for Canvas, designed to facilitate artists in cultivating global fanbases and acquiring enhanced insights into their audience engagement. A standout addition is an AI-powered translation tool, enabling manga creators to localize their scripts into seven key languages: English, Spanish, French, Indonesian, Thai, Traditional Chinese, and German. This optional translation feature will debut in a beta phase for English-speaking Canvas users this spring, with a broader market release anticipated later this summer.
Furthermore, Webtoon is launching an enhanced Canvas dashboard, promising “improved insights into series performance, deeper analytics to understand readership, and new tools to manage community engagement.” Complementing these updates, the company intends to expand its ad revenue sharing program, making it available to all creators working in any language supported on the Canvas platform.
In an interview with The Verge, Webtoon president Yongsoo Kim emphasized that these significant enhancements to Canvas are fundamentally designed to assist creators in achieving three core objectives: “grow their audience, build fandoms, and earn more from their work.” Kim elaborated that Webtoon's primary focus is to empower its creative community to navigate and overcome the inherent challenges often associated with traditional distribution models. He further characterized Canvas’s new translation capability as a strategic tool specifically crafted to streamline creators’ workflows and simplify their artistic journey.
“For a long time, language barriers and distribution challenges have limited creators’ reach,” Kim stated. “With these tools, we want to help creators reach readers around the world while keeping full creative control of their work.”
The functionality of Canvas’s new AI tool conceptually aligns with Amazon’s Kindle Translate feature, introduced last fall. When questioned about the translation program’s mechanics, Kim clarified that it integrates Webtoon’s proprietary language model with “a powerful, external LLM.” He assured that the program exclusively processes textual components of a manga page, with no content being stored or utilized to further train the underlying LLM. Recognizing that effective localization extends beyond mere text translation, the AI tool also incorporates a customizable glossary section, allowing creators to input series-specific information to enhance translation consistency and contextual understanding.
“The model will have relatively less context for titles that have just started and only have a few episodes published on the platform,” Kim explained. “But once a creator has begun translating their episodes and publishing more, the model will develop more cumulative context about the title and the overall quality of the AI-generated translations will improve.”
Acknowledging the inherent potential for inaccuracies in AI models, creators are advised to review their translated content for any potential errors. Kim, however, highlighted a robust quality control mechanism: should creators or readers identify mistakes, they can submit reports to Webtoon’s dedicated quality assurance team, initiating a human review process. Addressing concerns about potential reader apprehension regarding AI integration, Kim underscored that the translation tool is entirely optional, and any translated versions of a series will be promptly removed from the platform if a creator chooses to opt out.
“At WebToon, we strongly believe that this kind of technology should only be used to help our creators, not replace them,” Kim affirmed. “We are starting with the translation program, but we’re still thinking about what kinds of support based on AI and other technologies will genuinely support our creators’ daily lives.”
