Google's navigation application, Waze, is set to introduce a suite of new AI-driven functionalities and enhanced customization options. These updates include the capability for users to report road conditions through natural language and receive tailored navigation guidance.

Several of these forthcoming features leverage Google's Gemini AI assistant, aligning with the technology conglomerate's wider strategy to embed Gemini across its product ecosystem. This integration also strategically enhances Waze's competitive standing against alternative navigation platforms, such as Apple Maps.

The application will now propose routes by analyzing a user's past travel history in conjunction with its comprehensive understanding of urban traffic dynamics. For instance, a user who typically favors highways over local roads will find such routes prioritized in their suggestions. Users retain the flexibility to opt for alternative routes or disable personalization entirely within their settings if preferred. This personalized navigation feature is currently being deployed worldwide on both Android and iOS devices.

Furthermore, users can now utilize Gemini to locate destinations through a concise conversational interface, particularly when they identify their need but lack precise location details. By tapping the search voice icon, individuals can pose queries such as, "Find me a coffee shop that's open right now," "Find me parking close to Grand Mall," or "Find me a gas station nearby with the lowest prices." Waze will subsequently present a curated list of relevant options.

This specific capability, enabling destination discovery with Gemini, is presently being introduced to the global Waze beta community across Android and iOS platforms.

In addition, Waze is unveiling a dedicated Motorcycle mode, employing AI to factor in shortcuts and road restrictions specific to two-wheeled vehicles. This aims to assist riders in identifying optimal routes and receiving more precise estimated times of arrival. The mode will also highlight potential hazards that could pose challenges for motorcyclists, including potholes, speed bumps, raised crosswalks, shoulder endings, and narrow bridges.

The Motorcycle mode is currently being deployed in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, and the Philippines on both Android and iOS devices, with Waze indicating that expansion to additional countries is planned.

While Waze has long supported reporting traffic incidents, such as slowdowns, via natural speech, it is now extending this functionality to enable users to suggest map updates using the same conversational method. This includes reporting road closures or outdated address information.

For instance, a user could simply state, "The road is closed here," and Waze will transmit these details directly to local map editors. This conversational road update reporting feature is presently being rolled out globally for Android and iOS users.

Finally, a new "less chatty" mode has been introduced, designed to reduce interruptions during drives for users who prefer to concentrate on music or podcasts. Activating this setting will cause Waze to minimize the frequency and length of voice prompts. While essential alerts for hazards and turns will still be provided, their occurrence will be less frequent. The less chatty mode is currently being deployed worldwide on Android and iOS platforms.
