Warner Music Group (WMG) announced on Wednesday its acquisition of Sureel AI, an innovative startup specializing in AI attribution. Sureel's proprietary technology is designed to generate "AI DNA" for musical compositions, meticulously dissecting them into their constituent parts to accurately trace how artificial intelligence models utilize these elements.

This strategic acquisition is intended to bolster WMG's capabilities in monitoring the usage of its artists' and songwriters' creations within AI-generated content or for the training of AI models.

Robert Kyncl, Chief Executive of WMG, stated in a press release, "Bringing Sureel into WMG strengthens our capability for protection, control and monetization and ensures that the creative community remains in control of its intellectual property, name, image, likeness, and voice."

The financial details pertaining to the transaction were not disclosed.

Established in 2022, Sureel offers a comprehensive suite of services beyond its core attribution technology, including intellectual property provenance, audit and compliance reporting, model optimization, and AI business intelligence. The startup's robust name, image, and likeness (NIL) attribution suite is particularly adept at tracking the deployment of artist voices, likenesses, and performance identities in AI training and generation processes. This encompasses a range of applications such as voice clones, AI-generated avatars, and style replication.

WMG confirmed that Sureel will continue to operate as an independent platform, extending its services across the broader music and AI ecosystems.

Tamay Aykut, Sureel's founder and chief executive, remarked, "Rightsholders deserve to know how AI interacts with their work, and to share fairly in the value it creates. Sureel was built to make that possible, and with WMG’s backing, we can deliver on our mission at scale, building a more transparent and fair future and driving value growth for the whole music and entertainment ecosystem."

WMG's embrace of AI marks a significant shift from its initial stance of opposition. The company, which initially filed a lawsuit against music generation startup Suno in 2024, subsequently entered into a licensing agreement with the firm last year. At the time, WMG emphasized its commitment to ensuring artists and songwriters retain full control over the utilization of their names, images, likenesses, voices, and compositions in new AI-generated music.

It is noteworthy that other major labels, including Sony Music Entertainment and Universal Music Group, are currently pursuing substantial copyright infringement claims against various AI music startups.

Last year, WMG also resolved its legal dispute with AI music startup Udio, culminating in a licensing deal with the company.
