The burgeoning growth and widespread proliferation of data centers have concurrently fueled a significant public reaction.

A recent poll conducted by Harvard political scientist Stephen Ansolabehere revealed that 40% of individuals expressed support for the construction of a data center in their area, while 32% voiced opposition when asked about various industrial facilities in their neighborhoods.

An interesting insight from this poll, as reported by Axios, highlights that more people would prefer an e-commerce warehouse over a data center.

In the 1,000-person poll conducted in November, two-thirds of respondents were concerned that a new data center in their region would lead to higher electricity prices. While the prospect of jobs and economic growth initially bolstered the case for data centers, according to Axios, this sentiment may wane as most data center projects do not employ many people once they are fully operational.

Further demonstrating public sentiment, another survey conducted last month and published earlier this week by Quinnipiac University found substantially greater opposition to data center construction. This poll indicated that 65% of Americans oppose building an AI data center in their community, with only 24% of the 1,397 U.S. adults surveyed supporting such development.

These new polls collectively suggest that the debate surrounding data centers is far from resolved, and continued discontent from a significant portion of the electorate is increasingly likely to spill over into the political arena. Data centers once operated largely unnoticed in the background, but that is no longer the case.
