Ugreen, known for its phone power banks and chargers, is expanding into the smart home sector. At the IFA tech show this week, the company launched its HomeAgent platform, which combines security camera storage, on-device AI, and smart home control into one system managed by the voice assistant Uliya, promising that all functions run locally.
The hub serves as the central brain of the smart home, running a local-first AI that can be interacted with using natural language via Uliya. Three hub configurations are available, each storing all data locally and processing video footage on the device. This approach ensures data remains private and avoids monthly subscription fees, though it may entail a higher upfront cost.
The key selling point is that data never leaves the home, addressing privacy and recurring subscription concerns. Ugreen claims its powerful AI runs on the hub, offering features such as cross-camera tracking, smart alerts for people, vehicles, pets, and packages, as well as answering live status questions like "where is my pet now?"
The system also includes AI-powered video search and text descriptions of events, alongside natural language voice control of smart devices and automations. In addition to local camera storage, the hub can function like a NAS, storing personal files such as music, movies, and photos.
This eliminates the monthly storage fees common with cloud-based solutions like Amazon Ring, Alexa, and Google Nest cameras. Full retail pricing has not been announced, but the system will launch on Kickstarter in October with discounted early-bird pricing.
The concept of combining digital life onto a single local hub is gaining traction. Competitors like SwitchBot, Reolink, and Aqara have entered this space, and Anker launched a similar product called the Eufy MindBase at IFA.
Both systems utilize the Matter smart home standard to incorporate devices from various brands. Hands-on demonstrations at Ugreen's booth showed control of Nanoleaf lights and smart blinds via voice commands to Uliya.
The HomeAgent hub acts as a Matter controller supporting Wi-Fi, Zigbee, Thread, Bluetooth, NFC, ONVIF/RTSP, and PoE. Ugreen plans to publish a compatibility list, currently featuring Aqara, ThirdReality, SwitchBot, and Eve devices, while advising users to stick with approved products in the initial phase.
Ugreen is also launching a smart speaker for Uliya and a new line of security cameras: the SynCare Indoor Cam ID500 Pro, the SynCare POE Cam OD600 Pro, and the battery-powered SynCare Cam OD800 Pro. A unique feature is integration with a new E Ink Spectra digital photo frame to display hub-stored photos, again without cloud storage.
The three HomeAgent hub versions offer increasing compute power for advanced AI features: the HA100 for basic automation, the HA100 Pro for semantic understanding, and the MasterAgent MA100 using the NVIDIA Jetson Thor T5000 platform.
While the core functionality runs locally, features like push notifications and remote camera viewing require internet access. There is also an option to utilize the cloud for the Uliya voice assistant, allowing users to balance local processing with remote access capabilities.
Keeping all data within the home while leveraging AI to manage smart home and digital life is a compelling proposition. Success will depend on how well Ugreen’s HomeAgent integrates with existing ecosystems and its ease of use.
