Uber Eats has unveiled "Cart Assistant," a new artificial intelligence feature designed to streamline and accelerate the grocery shopping experience for its users. Announced on Wednesday, the beta version of this innovative tool is now accessible within the Uber Eats application.

Engaging with the new chatbot is straightforward: users simply navigate to their desired grocery store within the Uber Eats app and tap the distinct purple Cart Assistant icon located on the store's dedicated page to commence their shopping journey.

Customers possess the flexibility to either manually input a shopping list or upload an image of one. Cart Assistant efficiently processes this input, automatically populating their virtual basket with the required items. This capability extends to recognizing handwritten lists, screenshots of recipes, and their corresponding ingredients. Following the initial autofill, users retain full control, with options to personalize their basket by substituting items with preferred brands or adding additional products from the store's inventory.

A key aspect of Cart Assistant's design is its personalization engine. Uber Eats highlights that the tool leverages a user's past order history to prioritize familiar items, such as their usual milk brand or favorite oatmeal, thereby crafting a more tailored and intuitive shopping experience.

Commenting on the new feature, Uber CTO Praveen Neppalli Naga stated, "Users were telling us they wanted a quicker way to shop, and we know how precious your time is. Cart Assistant helps you get from idea to checkout in seconds." This underscores the company's commitment to efficiency based on direct customer feedback.

The introduction of Cart Assistant positions Uber Eats to enhance its competitive stance against other prominent food delivery and grocery platforms, many of which are already integrating or actively developing AI-powered chatbots. For instance, Instacart launched an AI search tool, powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT, in 2023 to offer customers time-saving benefits and personalized shopping recommendations. Similarly, DoorDash was reportedly testing its own AI chatbot, dubbed DashAI, within the same year.

Last year saw both Uber Eats and its main competitor, DoorDash, integrate with ChatGPT to optimize food ordering processes. Uber Eats' implementation allows U.S. users to browse local restaurants and menus directly within ChatGPT, with the final purchase completed in the Uber Eats app. DoorDash's integration, conversely, enables users to request meal plans and automatically add all necessary ingredients to their DoorDash cart.

It's also worth noting that Bloomberg reported in 2023 on Uber Eats' development of a separate AI-powered chatbot. This envisioned tool was slated to interact with users regarding their budget and food preferences, ultimately assisting them in placing orders.

Collectively, these initiatives demonstrate Uber Eats' aggressive investment in artificial intelligence across its platform. This includes a range of tools benefiting merchants, such as AI-generated menu descriptions, enhanced food photography, and concise customer review summaries, all aimed at improving the overall ecosystem.
