The world's leading chip manufacturer has indicated that it anticipates a "very long time" before its US-based production can fully satisfy customer requirements.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the globe’s largest producer of semiconductors, is reportedly facing significant challenges in meeting the escalating demand from American clients, even amidst its ongoing factory expansion within the United States. Following a recent shareholder meeting, TSMC CEO C.C. Wei commented, as reported by Reuters, “Customer demand is so high, and we can only support so much.” He further emphasized the company's commitment, stating, “We are doing our best to ensure TSMC does not become a bottleneck.” These insights were also corroborated by reports from Bloomberg.

The burgeoning adoption of artificial intelligence has already placed considerable strain on the memory sector, with widespread shortages of RAM and NAND Flash memory projected to persist for several years. This AI boom is simultaneously fueling a substantial increase in semiconductor sales, a market Deloitte research estimates could reach an impressive $1 trillion by 2027. While CEO Wei expressed a desire to increase TSMC’s pricing, he affirmed, according to Reuters, that the company would avoid the kind of abrupt price hikes witnessed in the DRAM and SSD markets.

Wei reiterated that fulfilling customer needs through US-based production could indeed take a "very long time," a sentiment also conveyed by Reuters. To address future demand, TSMC has already inaugurated a factory in Arizona and has committed a substantial investment of $165 billion towards establishing three additional manufacturing plants in the US, alongside two advanced packaging facilities and a dedicated research and development center.
