President Trump has issued a directive via Truth Social, instructing all federal agencies to discontinue the use of Anthropic products. This mandate follows a public disagreement between the company and the Department of Defense. While a six-month transition period has been granted for departments to phase out the products, the President explicitly stated that Anthropic would no longer be considered a federal contractor.
In his post, the President unequivocally declared, “We don’t need it, we don’t want it, and will not do business with them again.”
Interestingly, the presidential statement refrained from indicating any intention to invoke the Defense Production Act or to classify Anthropic as a supply chain risk. Instead, the President called upon the company to cooperate fully during the stipulated six-month phase-out, cautioning that non-compliance could lead to “major civil and criminal consequences.”
At the heart of the disagreement lies Anthropic’s steadfast refusal to permit its artificial intelligence models for use in mass domestic surveillance or to power fully autonomous weapons. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth reportedly deemed these restrictions to be unduly limiting.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei publicly reaffirmed his company's position on Thursday, asserting an unwillingness to compromise on these two critical stipulations.
Amodei stated, “Our strong preference is to continue to serve the Department and our warfighters — with our two requested safeguards in place. Should the Department choose to offboard Anthropic, we will work to enable a smooth transition to another provider, avoiding any disruption to ongoing military planning, operations, or other critical missions.”
