The US executive branch is officially ceasing to acknowledge the term “artificial intelligence.” Under a new executive order signed by President Donald Trump, official policy websites, documents, and press releases will now exclusively refer to “Super Intelligence.”
“The word super is the best word of all, and it’s the simplest,” Trump stated during an event on Tuesday announcing the launch of America.gov. He noted that Chinese President Xi Jinping also “loves it.” Trump argued that the term “artificial” is unnecessary because the technology is not artificial but rather powerful and brilliant. “It’s going to mostly be put to good use and we’ll stop the bad use,” he emphasized. He later compared the word “artificial” to “fake news.” Trump initially revealed plans for this rebranding during a speech to the United Nations General Assembly last week, an effort intended to alleviate concerns regarding rapid AI advancement and safety risks.
Executive agencies will not be required to amend existing regulations or historical documents, although the shift remains significant. “Superintelligence” is a recognized industry term for advanced versions of AI; however, the Trump administration aims to utilize this specific phrase to replace the statutory definition of AI. Consequently, US officials are expected to refrain from using the terms “artificial intelligence” or “AI” in official capacities.
Trump signed the executive order following a White House luncheon attended by tech CEOs and government officials to discuss Super Intelligence. During brief public remarks following the meeting, flanked by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, Trump characterized the gathering as “very productive” and “extremely friendly.”
“There’s a belief that there should be tremendous self-regulation,” Trump remarked. He added, “And we automatically have regulation with the Department of Justice, the FBI, all of that.” Regarding local challenges, such as the construction of massive data centers required for services, Trump stated that companies will work to support the community by providing necessary resources and economic aid. He concluded that “data centers are going to be very popular.”
