A mere two weeks after implementing a ban that led Anthropic to withdraw its robust cybersecurity-focused models, Mythos 5 and Fable 5, from the market, the administration has indicated a notable shift in its policy.
Anthropic is now permitted to make Mythos 5 accessible to over 100 specific U.S. government agencies and private sector companies. Crucially, this revised policy extends access to non-American employees within these organizations, as well as Anthropic’s own international staff, who were previously barred under the initial restrictions, according to reports from both Semafor and Reuters.
“I have determined that appropriate safeguards are in place to permit certain trusted partners to access the Claude Mythos 5 Model,” Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick stated in a communication to Anthropic’s Chief Compute Officer Tom Brown on Friday, a missive reportedly seen by Semafor.
Notably, the administration's latest directive does not appear to address Fable 5, a variant of Mythos 5 that was launched widely just days before the initial ban, touted for its enhanced protective features. Both models were ultimately pulled from availability after security researchers reportedly demonstrated an easy bypass of their supposed safeguards. Anthropic has not yet provided an immediate response to requests for comment on these developments.
