TikTok announced on Monday that it is introducing an AI shopping assistant alongside a new in-app checkout feature designed to allow users to purchase items directly from brands.

The company characterizes its new Shopping Assistant as a conversational AI agent built to assist users in discovering and buying products. TikTok states that this assistant understands context and retains users' preferences and needs throughout the interaction. It provides real-time, AI-driven shopping support, including details on products, shipping info, sizing options, availability, and assistance with finalizing a purchase.

Regarding the new checkout functionality, TikTok indicates that users can complete a purchase directly from a brand within their For You feed, the app's primary algorithm-driven video stream, using a single click.

These new capabilities enable TikTok to capture more of the user shopping journey and potential transaction value without diverting traffic to external sites. By combining a shopping assistant with direct payment processing, TikTok is transforming its impulse-driven discovery feed into an interactive hub where users can receive product answers and complete transactions instantly.

By integrating a dedicated shopping AI assistant into the app, TikTok aims to keep users within its ecosystem when searching for product information, discouraging them from relying on external AI tools such as OpenAI's ChatGPT.

TikTok reports that these new features are being developed in collaboration with various commerce platforms and payment providers, including Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza, and Stripe.

Although TikTok Shop, the platform's internal marketplace, has served as the main driver for the company's e-commerce goals, these new features expand its strategy beyond the dedicated shopping hub. Instead of solely relying on TikTok Shop to generate sales, the social network is embedding shopping tools more directly into the wider application, specifically within the For You feed.

This expansion coincides with TikTok's growing influence in the retail sector. Based on the TikTok Economic Impact Report released last week, platform activity contributed $81 billion to the U.S. GDP, with 54 million Americans reporting that they purchased a product after watching a TikTok video.

TikTok Shop launched in the United States in September 2023. Market research firm eMarketer estimates that it generated approximately $15.8 billion in U.S. sales in 2025, accounting for roughly 18% of all U.S. social commerce.
