Tidal has announced a significant update to its policies regarding AI-generated music, effective immediately, with further changes scheduled for July. While tracks identified as 100 percent AI-generated will receive a specific label starting next month, the platform has begun demonetizing them as of today.
The streaming service unveiled its new approach to AI-generated content, emphasizing its commitment to “protect artists” and “inform listeners.” Rather than imposing a complete ban, Tidal will introduce an icon on July 15th to mark tracks it identifies as entirely AI-generated. Crucially, these tracks are no longer eligible for monetization as of today. The company's announcement explicitly states, “Tidal’s priority is ensuring royalties go to original works directly produced, written, and performed by people. We will therefore not knowingly attribute royalties to music we identify as wholly AI-generated.”
Although Tidal has not disclosed the specific tools it employs for AI music detection, its new policy indicates a future expansion of labeling to include content that is “substantially AI-generated” as detection technologies advance. Furthermore, Tidal underscored that the responsibility for identifying AI-generated music extends beyond its own platform, stating it will “begin to enforce” an expectation for content distributors to accurately label such material.
To combat the misuse of AI generative tools that might “exploit an individual’s or group’s music, name or likeness, deceives listeners, or diminishes the quality of our service,” Tidal will also initiate the removal or blocking of “AI-generated music associated with fraudulent activity” by mid-July. This encompasses activities like music designed to mislead listeners, interfere with authentic artists, high-volume uploads, or “unusual streaming activity.”
Tidal’s move follows similar initiatives by its competitors to address the growing volume of AI-generated music. In April, Spotify introduced a verification program, awarding a green checkmark and a “Verified by Spotify” badge to profiles confirmed as real artists, while profiles primarily featuring AI-generated content are ineligible. Deezer has also developed its own tools to detect fully AI-generated music upon upload, aiming to reduce its visibility, and recently launched a website allowing users to scan playlists from various streaming platforms for AI-generated tracks.
