Threads, the social media platform owned by Meta, announced on Wednesday the introduction of an AI-powered feature designed to give users greater control over their feed personalization. The new "Dear Algo" functionality allows individuals to temporarily specify what content they wish to see more or less of within their Threads feed.

To utilize this innovative feature, users simply compose a public Threads post beginning with "Dear Algo," followed by their preference. For instance, to increase visibility of content related to popular podcasts, one might post, "Dear algo, show me more posts about podcasts." Any requested adjustments to the feed will remain active for a duration of three days.

This capability to temporarily influence feed content provides Threads with a distinct competitive advantage, offering a level of user-driven personalization currently unavailable on rival social media platforms.

As the company elaborated in a recent blog post, "Threads is where you go to keep up with what’s happening right now. But sometimes, what matters to you changes in an instant, and you want your Threads feed to reflect that — whether it’s seeing more posts during a live NBA game or less about a TV show you haven’t caught up on yet." This highlights the feature’s aim to align the user experience with evolving real-time interests.

While Threads, along with competitors like X and Bluesky, already provides a basic 'Not Interested' option for content preference, the "Dear Algo" feature represents a significant leap forward in granular personalization. Furthermore, this new functionality has the potential to enhance Threads' perception as a real-time information source, a characteristic historically associated with X.

The "Dear Algo" feature is currently available in the U.S., New Zealand, Australia, and the U.K., with Threads planning to roll it out to additional countries in the future.

This launch follows closely on the heels of a report from market intelligence firm Similarweb, which indicated that Threads has now surpassed X in daily mobile usage. Although X continues to hold a dominant position on the web, the Threads mobile application for both iOS and Android has consistently recorded an increase in daily active users over the past several months.

According to the report, Threads boasted 141.5 million daily active mobile users as of January 7, 2026, outperforming X, which registered 125 million daily active users on mobile.
