Recursive Superintelligence, an emerging AI company, announced a significant multi-year compute agreement worth $400 million with Amazon Web Services on Tuesday. The company, which revealed its operations in May with an initial $650 million in funding, is dedicated to developing open-ended, self-improving AI systems. This ambitious approach to AI research is inherently compute-intensive, and the new deal is designed to provide the necessary flexibility for the company to scale these advanced systems effectively.
This $400 million commitment from Recursive constitutes a substantial portion of its total funding received to date. However, during a call with TechCrunch, Socher, the company's CEO, indicated that this is merely the first of many such agreements. He stated that today's announcement is "likely going to be one of the smallest compute deals we’re going to sign in the next few years."
Recursive's strategic focus on self-improving AI systems dictates a unique allocation of its budget. A significant portion of funds that would typically be directed towards increasing headcount and operational expenses is instead invested directly into compute resources, as the company aims to automate its own product development processes.
Socher articulated this strategy by stating, "For us, it’s less about headcount and more about agent count."
Notably, Amazon's involvement in this deal does not include an investment component, differing from the hybrid investment models often seen with other major AI labs. Nevertheless, the sheer magnitude of Recursive’s commitment enables AWS to dedicate substantial resources to support the company’s specific and unique requirements. This deep collaboration may also serve as a precedent, potentially attracting other foundational AI companies to AWS in the future.
Jason Bennet, VP for startups and venture capital at AWS, confirmed this collaborative aspect, remarking, "Part of the agreement is that we’re going to co-develop infrastructure purpose-built for these types of company."
