Tesla Makes $2B Investment in Elon Musk’s xAI
Originally reported bytechcrunch

Tesla has invested $2 billion in Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, which developed the Grok chatbot. The investment was disclosed in Tesla’s recent shareholder letter, which highlighted xAI’s alignment with the company’s broader goals. The move comes shortly after xAI raised $20 billion in a Series E funding round, with other investors including Valor Equity Partners, Fidelity, and Qatar Investment Authority. Despite Tesla shareholders rejecting a proposal to invest in xAI in a vote last year, the company proceeded with the investment, citing its strategic benefits.

Tesla’s rationale for the investment is tied to the integration of AI into its products, as outlined in its Master Plan Part IV. Tesla is aiming to bring AI into the physical world, while xAI focuses on developing leading digital AI services, such as its large language model, Grok. The companies have already established a working relationship, with Tesla supplying its Megapack batteries to power xAI’s data centers and integrating Grok into some Tesla vehicles. Additionally, xAI plans to develop AI for humanoid robots, like Tesla’s Optimus.

Musk explained that while Tesla has the capability to handle many tasks internally, collaborating with xAI allows the company to accelerate its progress in AI and robotics. The partnership is intended to help both companies achieve their goals more efficiently. Tesla emphasized that the investment and the associated framework agreement would enhance its ability to develop and deploy AI products at scale.

Looking forward, Tesla plans to make significant capital expenditures to support its ambitions in vehicle autonomy and humanoid robotics. This year, Tesla is set to take major steps toward scaling the production of its Optimus robots and advancing vehicle autonomy, marking a significant phase in its future development.
