OpenAI announced on Thursday the release of an updated ChatGPT desktop application, now featuring integrated support for ChatGPT Voice. This enhancement empowers users to interact with the app conversationally, enabling them to control AI agents and execute various tasks directly on their computers through spoken commands.
This new voice capability is powered by OpenAI’s recently introduced family of advanced voice models, collectively known as ChatGPT-Live, which debuted earlier this month.
According to OpenAI, ChatGPT Voice seamlessly integrates with both ChatGPT Work and Codex. Its functionalities extend to leveraging computer use skills for navigating websites and applications. Furthermore, for macOS users, the inclusion of "Appshots" allows the application to access and interpret screen content, including alt-text descriptions.
It is important to note that the initial smartphone version of ChatGPT Voice, while offering smoother conversations and improved interruption handling, was not designed to initiate actions on mobile devices.
In contrast, Thursday’s desktop update presents a significantly more capable iteration. It allows users to articulate complex, multi-step commands and facilitates responsive interaction by prompting users for input when required by ChatGPT.
A demonstration video released by OpenAI showcased this advanced functionality, illustrating a developer successfully instructing ChatGPT to create a new thread, initiate a pull request, and diagnose the root cause of a bug, all through a single voice command.
The company confirmed the global rollout of ChatGPT Voice in the desktop app, emphasizing its ability to control computers and direct multiple agents within ChatGPT Work or Codex using only voice. Powered by GPT-Live, it enables simultaneous speaking, listening, and coordination of tasks within the application.
Additionally, OpenAI stated that users can access ChatGPT Voice within Codex via remote access through the iOS app.
In a related development, Anthropic has also enhanced its voice mode for Claude. This updated feature utilizes the company’s Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku models to efficiently complete tasks across a range of popular applications, including Gmail, Calendar, Slack, Notion, and Canva.
