The advent of large language models (LLMs) has spurred companies to develop AI-driven solutions for managing overloaded inboxes, specifically by categorizing emails and generating personalized draft replies. Email client Superhuman is now introducing an enhanced iteration of its auto-draft feature, designed to pinpoint crucial emails and formulate less robotic, more natural-sounding response drafts.
Superhuman has previously explored similar functionalities, such as instant replies and follow-up auto-drafts. Yet, many of these earlier attempts often produced responses that felt overly enthusiastic and distinctly artificial, leading to infrequent personal use. This latest version of the auto-draft feature, however, presents a notable improvement. During recent beta access, several generated drafts were sent with minimal to no manual modifications.
The application intelligently identifies emails requiring a response and crafts a draft reply, adapting its tone from the user's past communications. Furthermore, it provides two alternative variations for each draft, offering flexibility in choosing the most suitable response.
Personal experience with the feature revealed its capability to generate highly usable drafts, such as agreeing to pitch embargoes for further details or confirming meeting times, often requiring only minor edits. Notably, it also formulated responses to inquiries about authoring posts for TechCrunch, accurately stating that such tasks are not handled by the user, aligning with TechCrunch's policy against authored posts.
Despite its strengths, the feature is not without its imperfections. Initially, it frequently defaulted to positive responses for pitches or agreed to meeting times scheduled for post-midnight hours. Fortunately, the provision of alternative draft variations allowed for quick selection of a more appropriate response.
A key aspect of this feature is its ability to learn from user interaction and progressively refine its responses. For example, following an instance where a post-midnight meeting was suggested, the system learned and subsequently generated a draft explicitly stating that such timing was inconvenient.
The sheer volume of monthly emails received, partly exacerbated by AI facilitating easier first drafts for professionals in communications and PR, underscores the need for efficient management. While full automation of inbox handling via AI remains a step too far for some, this specific feature offers a valuable tool for responding to a greater number of individuals, particularly when extensive message typing is not required.
Users have the option to personalize their email responses by navigating to Settings > Personalization. Here, they can input details about themselves and their professional role, and also include relevant files or links to provide additional context for the AI.
Rahul Vohra, Superhuman's co-founder, reported significant user adoption during the testing phase, noting that 40% of auto-generated drafts were dispatched within a single day. Crucially, 60% of these sent drafts required no manual editing whatsoever.
Vohra clarified that previous features, such as Instant Replies, were developed using older models like GPT-3.5, which possessed less advanced intelligence and more limited context windows. In contrast, this latest implementation leverages a sophisticated array of diverse models.
“Today, we are using a mixture of models to make this work,” Vohra stated. He elaborated, “The actual writing is done by frontier models from both Anthropic and OpenAI. So we’re applying the maximum amount of intelligence and context to this that we possibly can to make the feature work.”
Following its acquisition by Grammarly last year, the company underwent a rebranding to Superhuman. Currently, the organization is developing Superhuman Go, an AI assistant designed to operate across multiple platforms, seamlessly transferring context between various applications.
