Suno is implementing significant updates to its download policy and introducing advanced watermarking technology.
In a move aimed at curbing the proliferation of low-quality AI-generated tracks and enhancing transparency, Suno has unveiled plans for a new watermarking technology and an updated download policy. CEO and co-founder Mikey Shulman elaborated on the company’s foundational principles and strategic direction in a comprehensive blog post, underscoring its pursuit of industry legitimacy.
These developments include the rollout of new transparency tools, alongside sophisticated watermarking and fingerprinting technologies. Shulman stated that these initiatives align with “emerging industry standards,” facilitating easier identification of content generated by Suno. He further indicated the company’s intention to collaborate with “distribution platforms on combatting fraud and misuse.”
The adjustment to the download policy was initially announced last year, following a settlement with Warner Music Group (WMG), and mirrors a similar agreement between WMG and Udio which led to the complete cessation of downloads from that platform. While specific details for the current rollout have not yet been provided, Suno previously indicated that downloads would be restricted to paying subscribers, with a cap on the number of monthly downloads per user.
Shulman’s communication consistently emphasized Suno’s dedication to transparency, respect for rights holders, and the intrinsic value of human-created art. However, he carefully clarified that it is not Suno’s role to “pass judgment” on the artistic merit of individual works, asserting that the decision to disclose the use of AI tools ultimately rests with artists and platform operators.
Suno did not immediately respond to inquiries seeking further specific details regarding the newly announced policies and technological advancements.
