Spotify has announced a new initiative to label AI-generated artists with “AI Persona” profile tags and will consequently exclude their music from its editorial and algorithmic recommendations.
Beginning in mid-September, Spotify users will observe “AI Persona” badges on certain artist profiles, indicating that the artist’s identity is AI-generated rather than representing a human individual. While artists will have the option to self-identify as AI Personas, the company states it will not rely solely on self-disclosure for this classification.
Spotify will also undertake a comprehensive review of artist profiles, specifically identifying those where the artist’s name and visual representation appear to be photorealistic AI-generated identities. This review will initially prioritize profiles that have reached pre-defined audience thresholds, ensuring that more widely listened-to artists are covered first.
Once assigned, the AI Persona badges will be prominently displayed on the artist’s profile banner, within the About section, in search results, and on track rows across various playlists.
By default, Spotify will not feature AI Personas in its editorial or algorithmic recommendations, nor will their music be included in users’ personalized recommendations—unless a user explicitly chooses to follow an AI Persona. A user’s decision to follow an artist is considered a clear signal of their desire to hear more music from that specific individual or group.
This move represents the latest expansion of Spotify’s AI policies, which detail guidelines for the presence of AI-generated music on its service. Its current policy, previously outlined, already employs industry-standard techniques to identify and label AI music, and prohibits unauthorized AI voice clones and deepfakes from the platform.
Consistent with others in the music industry, Spotify is striving to balance AI-driven innovations—such as its own AI-powered Prompted Playlists, AI DJ and chat features, and upcoming AI remixes—with the imperative to curb the proliferation of low-quality, mass-produced AI content, often referred to as "slop." A widespread presence of such content could diminish user experience and potentially lead to subscription cancellations.
Spotify has also confirmed that artists will retain the right to appeal an "AI Persona" label if they believe it has been incorrectly applied to their profile.
Acknowledging a growing consumer apprehension towards AI-generated art, Spotify stated in its announcement that, “while we believe all artists have creative choice in determining how they present themselves, Spotify’s programming is focused on elevating music from authentic artists building careers in music.”
However, the company clarified that the "AI Persona" designation is a judgment concerning the artist’s profile identity, not the music itself.
“Although there’s a broad spectrum in how artists use AI as a creative tool, the question of whether a profile represents an actual human is one where Spotify can help make a clear determination. This badge is about the artist’s public identity, not about how the music was made,” the company articulated.
Information regarding the creation methods of the music itself will continue to be accessible through Spotify’s other features, such as AI Credits and SongDNA.
In the coming months, Spotify plans to introduce a new tool that will enable users to report artist profiles they suspect are unlabeled AI Personas.
The introduction of these labels will additionally assist Spotify users in distinguishing between AI Personas and forthcoming AI-generated remixes and covers, which will soon be permitted under Spotify’s recent licensing agreements with labels UMG and Merlin. These agreements will facilitate fan-made remixes and covers while ensuring that revenue is directed back to the participating artists.
Regarding AI Personas, Spotify has indicated that artists will be able to begin self-disclosing their identity via Spotify for Artists starting August 11, 2026. The labels themselves are scheduled to appear on profiles beginning next month.
