Spotify is enhancing its listening experience by integrating advanced AI, allowing Premium subscribers to engage in conversational interactions with the app to select desired music or other audio content.

This new functionality is rolling out initially as a beta release in the U.S., Ireland, and Sweden, accessible to Premium users aged 18 and over on both iOS and Android devices, exclusively in English. Spotify notes that as a beta, occasional imperfections may occur, with user feedback being crucial for its refinement and enhancement.

While Spotify's official announcement did not delve into the specific underlying AI technologies, the company confirmed to TechCrunch that it employs a hybrid approach, leveraging both its proprietary AI and models from various external providers, selecting the most suitable technology for each specific task.

This integration represents the latest advancement in Spotify's strategy to harness AI for enhancing user interaction with its vast catalog of music, podcasts, and audiobooks. Previous AI innovations include the AI DJ, offering direct vocal engagement, as well as AI-powered features for creating playlists via prompts and facilitating connections with third-party AI chatbots such as ChatGPT.

This new functionality broadens the conversational capabilities within Spotify, moving beyond the AI DJ experience. Users can now engage in interactive dialogue with the app directly from their mobile device's Home and Now Playing screens. Through either typing or speaking, users can have dynamic conversations to select their next audio content, delve into their listening history, or gain deeper insights into their preferred music, podcasts, or audiobooks.

This enables users to ask a wide range of questions, such as the inspiration behind a particular song, album release dates, or even receive personalized recommendations for other artists based on their current listening. Furthermore, users can inquire about their own listening patterns, like the initial play date of a specific track or recent genre preferences.

In its announcement, Spotify provided illustrative examples of how to leverage this interactive technology. Users could initiate a request by asking Spotify to “play some artists I haven’t heard before,” subsequently refining the selection with follow-up commands, such as adding a specific artist by name or narrowing the choices to more recent tracks. Further customization is possible by specifying preferences like “more upbeat” or other stylistic directives.

Additionally, the feature allows users to perform actions such as saving songs, adding them to their queue, or following artists directly through conversational commands.

This functionality is currently being rolled out to the previously mentioned markets on mobile devices.
